Pīkake n.1. The Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac), introduced from India, a shrub or climber, with rounded, dark-green leaves and small, white, very fragrant flowers used for leis. Since Princess Ka-ʻiu-lani was fond of both these flowers and her peacocks (pīkake), the same name was given the flowers. (Neal 680.) (as found in wehewehe.org)

MEET OUR ARTISAN: LAHA’OLE DESIGNS

Laha'ole Designs offers jewelry inspired by the natural beauty and culture of Hawai'i, crafted by Native Hawaiian owner and designer Tanya Uyehara. Born and raised on Oʻahu in a family rich in arts, music, and hula, Tanya founded Laha'ole Designs in 2013 while on maternity leave, initially as a way to create meaningful gifts. Her vision for the brand has since grown, blending unique craftsmanship with deep cultural significance. "Laha'ole" means "rare, choice, unique," a reflection of Tanya's commitment to creating pieces that stand out in both beauty and meaning.

Each piece by Laha'ole Designs is influenced by native Hawaiian flowers and the stories passed down through generations, helping to share and preserve Hawaiian culture. Crafted with care, these designs are meant to be cherished and worn with pride, honoring the legacy and natural beauty of Hawai'i.
